When to Rewire a House There are many
signs of faulty wiring that indicate it is time to rewire your house. Updating
your cables protects you and your appliances while increasing the future
saleability of the property.
In this week’s blog at Worthy
Electrical Services Ltd we look at reasons why you may need to
rewire your house.
Reliance on Extension Cables If you have extension cables coming out of several plug
sockets in your property, you don’t have enough outlets. With the amount of
technology in a home rising, the demand for more charging stations and power
outlets is also increasing.
Older homes were not originally designed to cope with
such a high electricity demand, so not only do you require new plug sockets,
but the house will also need rewiring. Fuses in outdated electrical circuits
will blow if there is too much power going through them.
Homes that are over 40 years old will probably have out
of date and degrading wiring. This will need replacing to comply with modern electrical safety standards .
Sparks & Electric Shocks Another sign that your house might need rewiring is if
you see sparks when you plug or unplug a device into a socket. It is normal for
this to happen sometimes, but it could cause severe damage if it occurs
regularly.
The sparks are caused by the outlets short-circuiting.
You may not always see the spark but instead, feel an electric shock. Sparks
cause heat to build up and melt the insulation on the wires.
Exposed wires inside the outlets can lead to electrical
fires. Small fires can be caused by faulty wiring but might not create larger
fires. If your outlets are discoloured or warm, then this issue might have
occurred.
Blown or Flickering Bulbs When there is too little or too much electricity going
through the wiring, bulbs flicker. Faulty bulbs can cause flickering or blown
lights, but the decline or spikes in voltage are often due to a wiring issue.
If you turn on a light and hear a buzzing or sizzling
noise coming from behind the switch, this also indicates a wiring problem. You
should have this checked and rewired by a specialist.
